Verse for today...
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. Proverbs 22:1a
We've had half of the season to see how Micah Parsons has fared in Green Bay. That's enough time for me to give my opinion. Anyone who gave an opinion before a game was even played was just guessing. Here's what I think.
Micah Parsons is a high level pass rusher. He sees the ball and goes to get the player with the ball. He's not that good of a coverage linebacker. He doesn't really predict what will happen that well. He reads and reacts. Green Bay is using him properly as a pure pass rusher.
Green Bay has gotten some good games out of Parsons. They have also gotten two or three that were not very impactful. The Packers really needed a player to provide a pass rush as they were severely lacking in that area. Otherwise, their defense was pretty solid. They gave up two first round picks and DT Kenny Clark to get Parsons. Was it worth it to the Packers? From what I've seen so far, I would say yes but barely. He made a play that prevented a loss to the Dallas Cowboys when he sacked Dak Prescott late in the game. The game ended in an overtime tie. Parsons has 6.5 sacks this year which is on pace for about 12. That's not otherworldly but is better than just plain old good.
So, was it worth it to Dallas? Most people said they got the short end of the stick by a lot. I don't think so. It's true that their defense has been very bad this year, but they were bad with Parsons last year. Since they were more than one player away from having a good defense, I think it was not terrible to get rid of Parsons. They got Kenny Clark who has been a really good defensive tackle for years. The Cowboys needed that, plus they have two extra first round draft picks to try to get better over the next couple of years. To analyze it fully, we will need to see how those two draft picks do in the NFL.
But, for me, here's the kicker. Jerry Jones said Micah Parsons told him that he would sign a contract for a certain number of years and for a certain amount of money. Are you a man of your word or not? What in the world is wrong with all of you people saying that Jones needed to give Parsons top dollar and forget about the handshake agreement he had with Parsons?! If you aren't going to play for an agreed amount because other players were suddenly signing contracts for more money, then you shouldn't have said you would. I could care less if Parsons' agent wasn't present. The Verse for today from Proverbs 22:1 says that a good name is better than great riches. It doesn't say that it's better than $10. Basically, it says it's more valuable than millions of dollars. It does not set a limit at all! Jerry Jones has been a great businessman all of his life, and he said that he has made many huge deals based on a handshake and gotten it in writing later. I enjoy picking on the Cowboys as much as nearly anyone, but don't take Parsons' side in this. He's dead wrong to not honor what he said he would do if he indeed said it, and I'm 100% convinced that he did. He has never denied it.
Who won the trade in my opinion? On the field, it was about even. However, from a moral standpoint, Dallas most certainly won.
May God always be your number 1 draft pick!
