Verse for today...
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Isaiah 43:18
The celebration of the Philadelphia Eagles is over. It's time for a new season. All 32 teams want what the Eagles got in February. That includes the Eagles. The vast majority of the teams think they can get there. It never ceases to amaze me at how optimistic these teams are... and how misguided. When it comes down to it, about eight or nine teams have a realistic chance to win the Super Bowl each year. It has happened a time or two, but it's rare that a team comes out of nowhere to win it all. The Rams did it with unknown quarterback Kurt Warner. That was about a quarter of a century ago.
Here are the teams who I think have a chance to win it all this year.
Philadelphia Eagles - How can you count out the defending champs? You can't. They lost some people on defense, but their defense should still be very solid. The offense still has Saquon Barkley and the best offensive line in football. Landon Dickerson, the awesome right guard of the Eagles has a knee injury, and I'm not sure how bad it is. I think he will be all right, but that bears watching. Injuries and complacency are the two biggest reasons why teams almost never repeat as Super Bowl champs.
Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs will be contenders as long as Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback. He is simply the best player in the NFL. Other quarterbacks might have better stats, but nobody, and I mean nobody in today's NFL, can match Mahomes' drive to win and his ability to rise to nearly every occasion. If Josh Simmons is as good of a left tackle as he seems to be so far, the rest of the league better watch out because the deep passing game might be back. The defense is still very solid.
Buffalo Bills - One of these years, it will be Josh Allen's year to win it all. I don't know if he will ever have a better schedule with which to accomplish it. The Bills only leave the Eastern Time Zone one time, and that's to go to Houston. Virtually every tough team that they play comes to Buffalo this year. They have the Ravens, Chiefs, Buccaneers, Bengals and Eagles all coming to Buffalo. If they don't have the number 1 seed in the AFC this year, they will either have a bunch of injuries or have played some seriously sorry football compared to what they usually play. They still have to get past the Chiefs. Tom Brady beat Peyton Manning like a drum in the regular season and the playoffs, but at least Peyton beat him twice in the playoffs. Maybe this is the year for Allen to get past Mahomes.
Baltimore Ravens - Lamar Jackson has come close but has not been able to make it to the Super Bowl. If he can stay injury free, the Ravens have a good chance. Their defense is always good. It could be great this year.
Detroit Lions - The Lions have as good of a chance as anyone IF they perform well with their new offensive and defensive coordinators. That's a big IF. Ben Johnson was awesome, and Aaron Glenn did a great job, especially with all of the injuries the Lions had to deal with on defense last year. They do indeed belong in the Super Bowl chase.
Cincinnati Bengals - I'll put them in the Super Bowl chase because of how good Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase are. Their defense was pitiful last year, and they still almost made the playoffs. If the defense can improve to middle of the road, they will have a chance.
To round out the Super Bowl chase teams, I'll add the Rams if Matt Stafford can be healthy, the Chargers if everything clicks on offense after they lost left tackle Rashawn Slater for the year, and the Packers if Jordan Love takes a big step forward with his consistency.
That's nine teams. If your team is not on this list, you still have hope, but it's the kind of hope that only comes around about once every quarter of a century!
May God always be your number 1 draft pick!
