Trey Lance is a Dallas Cowboy
Trey Lance was a surprise pick of the San Francisco 49ers after they traded away their number 1 picks in 2021, 2022 AND 2023 along with a 3rd round pick in the 2022 draft to select him. Lance couldn't even win the backup quarterback job this year in training camp. Yesterday, the 49ers waved the white flag and traded Lance to the Cowboys for a 4th round pick.
Why do the Cowboys want him? I suppose they see the raw talent that Lance has, and they hope he can win the backup job and eventually challenge Dak Prescott for the starting job. What are the odds of that you ask? I'd say they aren't great. If 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who is an offensive genius, can't get Lance to play well enough to win the backup job after working with him for about three years, then the Cowboys stand very little chance of making anything much out of him. One thing the Cowboys have is a lot of ego, so they THINK they can do it. Let them have at it, and good luck! They're gonna need it.
As for the 49ers, how many General Managers in the NFL could survive that bad of a screw up? Well, John Lynch has, mostly because he has helped build a very solid team over the last few years. I'm a little worried though. There's a reason Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant. He doesn't have great arm strength, and he has tendencies that teams will likely pick up on that will almost certainly make him somewhat less effective this year. What if he doesn't play very well, and what if backup Sam Darnold doesn't play very well either? Mr. Lynch could find himself in hot water. The 49ers have a roster ready to challenge for a Super Bowl UNLESS the quarterback situation, including the Trey Lance fiasco, prevents it.
May God always be your number 1 draft pick!
